ControlLogix or CompactLogix?

Controller selection is driven less by I/O count and more by network, motion, redundancy and safety architecture.

The engineering criteria that decide it

  1. I/O and network scale: Local + remote I/O count and EtherNet/IP node count set the capacity limits.
  2. Motion axes: Integrated motion axis count and synchronization needs (with Kinetix).
  3. Redundancy: Whether a ControlLogix/GuardLogix redundancy architecture is required for a continuous process.
  4. Safety level: SIL/PL requirements and the integrated safety scope of GuardLogix / Compact GuardLogix.
  5. System scale: A single machine (CompactLogix) or a multi-unit plant architecture (ControlLogix)?
  6. Expansion headroom: Capacity headroom for future I/O, network and motion expansion.
  7. Maintenance architecture: Chassis-based modularity versus a compact single unit; field service access.
  8. Software standard: Studio 5000 project standardization and alignment with the existing plant architecture.

A practical approach
